Dear Colleagues and Friends

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 13th Swiss Experimental Surgery Symposium (SESS), which is supported and hosted by the Department of Surgery, HFR Fribourg (Chairman: Prof. B. Egger) and the Department of Intensive Care Medicine (Director: Prof. J. Takala), University of Bern .

Following the successful twelve symposia held in Bern 2005/2007/2014 and in Fribourg 2009/2011/2013/2015 as well as in Geneva 2006/2008/2010/2012/2016, we are happy to host the meeting again in Fribourg.

The symposium will be held on

January 12/13, 2017 at the University of Fribourg

on the subject of

The right treatment at the right time to the right patient.

Medical research, especially surgical research, is becoming more and more important in our current world of innovations, fast application of new devices and implementation of new techniques in humans.

All these projects necessarily require pre-clinical testing which is normally carried out in animal trials. Thus, it is of outmost importance to train young researchers, whether medical or veterinary doctors, biologists or engineers in order that they may acquire the necessary competencies.

In addition, we will present this time also results from anesthesia and surgery research projects designated to improve knowledge and care primarily for animals.

However, while experimental surgery is performed in animals, innovative, new surgical strategies are also employed in humans. Therefore the symposium 2017 in Fribourg will also address this research topic with presentations about novel surgical approaches in patients.

Such meetings are not only important for the teaching of technical aspects, but they also give the opportunity to consider ethical and regulatory aspects of animal use for experimentation.
